Recap
Final Score: Chalk Scratchings 6-1 Enate United
Match Summary: (Chalk Scratchings)
Great performance today, excellent start to the season. It has to be up there in one of our best ever performances, and against a team who put six past us last year. Well done to debutants Ed Day, Dylan Hughes and Ed Jones who all looked as though they had been playing with us for years. Slightly gushing match report below.
Scratchings season opener threatened to get off to a typically poor start, lining up with ten men (Giorgio!!!!) and an unfamiliar line up with 3 new faces in the side. Both sides started the game tentatively, each containing the other side and preventing much progress towards either penalty area.
We remained disciplined and composed at the back, and typically attacked quickly up the wings, passing the ball around nicely and making the opposition work. The base of our attack for the first goal came from a long ball knocked up to Ed who flicked on to Harry, eventually coming back to goalscorer Ed.
Two more goals from Ed to complete a first half hat-trick, including an excellent team goal. Ball passed from right back to left back across the defence, up the wing, into the middle, up the wing again, back to the middle, and on once more to striker Ed who applied a cool finish.
Clearly rattled by their poor first half performance and feeling the heat Enate hardly bounded out of the blocks. Working hard up front and on the wings to put them under pressure, Ed pounced on some sloppy play at the back to grab another.
A good chunk of the second half was played in our half, with Enate pressing but failing to penetrate. Solid work in midfield and defence pushed them wide, and their crosses were either blocked or well defended. Their goal was very soft, coming from a questionable penalty, taking us back to 4-1 with about 10 minutes remaining.
We lost Dylan to injury, but saw the game out comfortably, with Ed bagging a fifth and Cary finding the energy to sprint half the pitch to grab a goal at the death.
We were excellent in all positions, and it is hard to find fault with any aspect of our play. I had very little do in goal due to a very solid defence, we played the ball out well from the back, showing a composure on the ball that we have sometimes struggled to find in the past. Their one threat came from a big guy in centre mid, but we sufficiently contained him. We played to our strengths, working the ball down the wings and punishing their mistakes. We managed the game really well, remaining composed, communicating, staying disciplined, positioning well and moving around to show for the pass.
Man of the Match: Ed Jones. 5 goals as lone striker!
