About The Club
Hackney Wednesday Football Club formed in 2016, a pipe dream in a pub in East London. Much like it’s Sheffield counterpart the club gained its name because it’s founding members played together after an early finish at work on Wednesday afternoons. The clubs brief history includes a fifth place finish in the second division of the Hackney and Leyton League last year.
A key figure during the formative year of the football club was Robert Lupton who formed the Wednesday in it’s 6 a side format in 2011. His relationship with the club has led to his becoming the club’s Chairman and Player Manager wearing the number 14 Shirt with pride. He has been helped along the way by Fergus McIntosh (Club Secretary and mercurial number 10), Martyn Davies (Club Treasurer and Clubs record scorer) and Tom Zennith (Creative Director and injured fullback).
Wednesday will start in the Second Division of The Camden League and hope to challenge for promotion if they can keep their core squad together for the majority of the season. Players to watch out for include towering Norwegian Centre Half Mark Enoksen Smith, Tough Tackling Defender Calum McIntosh and Hitman Davies. On their day Wednesday can beat anyone with their expansive, counter attacking football, whilst always respecting the beautiful game and Hackney Marshes, the spiritual home of football.
